SkiWelt invests 6.5 million

into even better runs and so many new services

Not a year goes by without improvement – not a year goes by without investment. And even in the 40th year of its existence, SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental has invested heavily again: this year, over 6.5 million euros.

SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental was founded in 1977. An alliance of six independent ski resorts, which would later become a model for several other ski regions. This was the beginning of a single success story, a success story that will continue this year with a variety of measures and improvements. In 2017 too, continuous expansion of the snowmaking systems and ongoing investment into even better runs throughout the entire SkiWelt are at the top of the to-do list. What else is new? Let us tell you about it…

Wow! So accurate – the world’s first slope snow measuring system

A revolution in slope grooming: the new snow measuring system, which as of this winter will be used throughout the entire SkiWelt. By means of GPS, the snow coverage of all runs will be determined to within a few centimetres. During slope grooming work, this information is passed on in real time to the drivers, who therefore know precisely how much snow is currently sitting beneath their high-performance machines. A quantum leap in snow management: each section of a run can have snow added with pinpoint accuracy – not too much and not too little. This means reduced and more targeted use of manmade snow and consequently less water and energy consumption, less fuel and shorter operating times for the snow groomers. 500,000 euros have been invested in this measure.
As many as 65 snow groomers operate night after night in the SkiWelt in order to provide the perfect conditions across the 284 kilometres of slopes for the following day. Seven of the newest high-tech snow groomers have been purchased this winter alone.

Wow! So practical – a ski depot at the valley lift station in Brixen im Thale

Comfort and service – these are two factors, besides the perfect slopes, that make the SkiWelt a real winner. In terms of service, a fantastic new facility is available in Brixen this winter. Right next to the valley lift station of the SkiWeltbahn in Brixen, winter sports fans can look forward to being able to use a modern ski depot with around 300 heated and ventilated lockers. The depots offer space for three complete sets of ski equipment (skis/board, boots, poles, helmet), plenty of room to change plus beauty areas with a sink, mirror and hairdryer. You don’t even need a separate ticket; simply book it along with your lift pass, which is also what gains you access to the depot – convenience to ensure a family day on the slopes gets off to a good start. Lugging around your equipment, horrible icy ski boots, cold wet clothes – all that is a thing of the past.

Wow! So cool – 20 years of Boarders Playground in Westendorf

Westendorf is full of surprises for the anniversary year, thanks to a new fun park concept, which will take us “back to the roots – back to fun”. The focus here is on playful access to freestyle sport for all ability levels. Beginner or professional, snowboarder or skier, the two playgrounds on the mountain (the BIG Playground) and in the valley (the Mini Playground) promise a favourite line for everyone! The Mini Playground on the Westendorf ski field now incorporates a mini-cross line with steep curves and waves. And to ensure the kids have plenty to do, a few mini-cross races by floodlight are planned for this winter (6/20/27 Feb and 6 March). The BIG Playground on the Gampenkogel also offers a new super-cross line: a permanent super-cross line (snake run/banked slalom) for all abilities.

Wow! So diverse: the new SkiWelt Tour

Discover one of the largest and most modern ski resorts in the world on the newly signposted SkiWelt Tour. The tour can be enjoyed in a clockwise (green signs) or anti-clockwise direction and skiers can start and end the tour in any of the SkiWelt villages. Of course, you can also extend the SkiWelt Tour by incorporating a valley run or two along the way. With 21 valley runs to choose from, the SkiWelt offers more variety than any other ski resort. And while we are on the subject of variety, it is possible map out your day’s skiing in the SkiWelt so that you never have to take the same lift or ski the same run twice, unless you want to of course.

Wow! So bewitching: experience the new Witches Winter Programme

Do witches actually hibernate? Up until now perhaps. But not this winter! Things start to get all “witchy” as soon as the season starts at SkiWelt Söll this year. The snow witches will be sweeping, flying and skiing through SkiWelt Söll from Sunday through to Thursday. You might spot them randomly at the huts, but at 10:76 they are always in front of their witches hut, the Simonalm, where the large cauldron bubbles away with your magical witch’s potion. And should you wish to get to know the world of witches in more detail, you should definitely take part in the unique witch’s meal in the dark (booking required). Enjoy a lunch where you are invited to marvel, understand and feel - a part of it takes place in absolute darkness.

Wow! Fun on the slopes starts even earlier in Brixen and Westendorf.

Enthusiastic early risers get to enjoy the fun first on the SkiWelt’s slopes. From 1 February, SkiWelt Brixen and SkiWelt Westendorf will both be offering their “early bird” deal on selected lifts in Brixen im Thale and Westendorf: 22 kilometres of freshly groomed runs invite you to enjoy skiing at sunrise. The following lifts will open their doors from 7.30am: SkiWeltbahn, Sonnenlift, Choralmbahn and Alpenrosenbahn 1 & 2.

Wow! So ideal for ski tourers: the new ski touring evening at SkiWelt Ellmau

There is a strict ban on all ski touring outside of the SkiWelt’s operating hours for safety reasons! However, on Thursday evenings from 4 January 2018 until 8 March, SkiWelt Ellmau now offers touring enthusiasts the chance for a very special cross-country experience. Thus, the valley run will be open until 10 pm for ski tourers. After that, the slopes are completely closed to allow a winch Cat to groom the runs for the following day. As a special treat: the Kaiserlounge at the top lift station of the Hartkaiserbahn is open from 6 pm – 10 pm. Refreshment after an energetic ski tour is therefore well taken care of.

Wow! So sustainable! New GPS snow depth measuring

Energy efficiency is called for at the SkiWelt. From the latest generation of snowmaking systems, the 15 close-to-nature snow reservoirs, the use of renewable energy (hydropower) for the lifts and the use of solar energy and heat pumps, to the new and extensive GPS snow depth measuring system for efficient slope grooming and consequently a reduced and more targeted use of manmade snow. The theme of sustainability has always played a major role at the SkiWelt.

These efforts for greater sustainability were recognised when the SkiWelt won an ecology award at the World Snow Awards 2017 in London.

Wow! Such an example: getting to the SkiWelt by public transport

Public transport right into the heart of one of the biggest and most modern ski resorts in the world – SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser –Brixental offers this like virtually no other ski region can. For example, Hopfgarten, Westendorf and Brixen i.Th. have their own train stations, while all the other resorts can be easily reached by train from Kufstein and Wörgl railway stations. There is even a new direct night train connection from London to Kufstein or Wörgl. Leaving at 3.04 am from London, the train stops at Brussels and Cologne and from here the Austrian “ÖBB NightJet” continues to Tyrol – arriving at 8.30 am, the perfect time to hit the slopes. An attractive alternative to flying, which incidentally is possible seven days a week in both directions.

Flix to the SkiWelt slopes:
The Flixbus transports winter sports enthusiasts to the SkiWelt three times a week on an overnight service. Whether The Hague, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Oldenburg, Hannover, Dortmund, Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden or Prague, 14 lines and over 70 stations are available to guests between 8 December 2017 and 8 April 2018. Head up to the slopes the next morning relaxed and well rested. Day visitors from Munich can also climb aboard in the morning, even arranging their SkiWelt ticket online at the same time as booking their travel.
