Pressrelease, 4th of February 2015
23 MIO & 960 tons of steel for the new Hartkaiserbahn in the SkiWelt Ellmau
After 44 years of service and carrying 34 million passengers, time is being called on the old Hartkaiser funicular railway
With the construction of the Hartkaiser funicular railway in Ellmau in 1970, cable car history was re-written in that it was, at that time, the most modern of its kind in the Alps. But now a new chapter is being written. The old lift is being replaced with an ultra-modern 10-seater extra-large gondola lift exploiting every aspect of the latest lift technology. The new Hartkaiserbahn will be one of the most modern cable cars in the world!
It all comes to an end on Easter Monday: 6 April 2015 will be your last chance to ride on and say a fond farewell to the legendary funicular railway. It has been a faithful servant for 44 years carrying no fewer than 34 million skiers safely and comfortably from Ellmau into the heart of SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental.
The new 10-seater cable car will provide a new dimension in comfort, service and speed. It will now be able to transport 3,200 people an hour, twice the previous capacity of 1,500; all the cabins provide disabled access and are equipped with Wi-Fi and heated seats for the ascent and descent and, with a particularly long access platform (eight metres longer than before), will provide comfortable and relaxed boarding with no pushing and shoving – the advantages of which families with small children in particular will appreciate. In less than nine minutes passengers will be transported from Ellmau to a height of 1,530 metres. Another completely new feature will be the possibility of boarding and alighting in the newly built intermediate station. The total length is more than 2.1 kilometres with an altitude gain of 703 metres.
23 million Euros is the cost of this investment in the future, which will benefit summer and winter visitors alike. At the summit station the “Erlebniseldorado Hartkaiser” is being created with its own children’s restaurant, child care for toddlers, ski school with children’s ski school and ski storage. The valley station is also being considerably redeveloped and will comprise a completely open access area with sports shop, a heated, 1500m² ski storage area, restaurant, après-ski bar, offices and staff accommodation. A new underground car park is also being built with more than 150 places, free for passengers on the Ellmau cable cars.
A spectacular sight will be the dismantling of the old funicular railway. On 7 and 8 April, in other words immediately after the last day of operation, the old wagons weighing several tonnes each will be lifted off the rails by crane, and work on dismantling the 44-year-old facility will then begin – no less than 960 tonnes of steel will be brought down into the valley.
