Hiking and having Fun in the biggest Natural Playground in the Alps

360° views from the Hohe Salve mountain
360° views from the Hohe Salve mountain

700 km of hiking trails, 70 three-thousand-metre-high peaks, 50 alpine huts, mountain inns and snack bars: the cable cars and lifts in the Wilder Kaiser – Brixental holiday region make the best of the Tyrolean Alps an easily accessible pleasure. Twelve cable cars are in operation from May until October and you can take advantage of them with the SkiWelt Hiking Experience Pass. No matter if you want to go walking with small children or grandparents, Nordic walking, mountain biking, paragliding or take a break for some rest and relaxation in the unspoiled mountain countryside, getting there is always quickest and most comfortable if you use the lifts. In the biggest natural playground in the Alps, wonderful panoramic hiking trails lie at the feet of all nature lovers and present views of the majestic Wilder Kaiser. There are also 6 mountain adventure parks: Lake Filzalm in Hochbrixen, Ellmi’s Zauberwelt – magical world on the Hartkaiser, the Hohe Salve, KaiserWelt on the Brandstadl, Hexenwasser in Hochsöll and Alpinolino on the Choralpe. The lifts can take you to all 6 adventure parks from May until October and are suitable for both children’s pushchairs and wheelchairs. Admission is included in the lift ticket. Lively interaction at the adventure stations in the magical worlds, the play and discovery parks, the sparkling lakes and rustic alpine huts fills explorers and adventurers, big and small, with enthusiasm. And after all that outdoor fun, what better way to end the day than tucking into some typical Tyrolean specialities while sitting on a sun terrace or in a cosy Alpine parlour.

Mountain Lake & High Moor: simply idyllic at Lake Filzalm
Lake Filzalm (1,300 m), known locally as the Filzalmsee, is a popular spot with walkers in Hochbrixen. Its charming Alpine scenery and rare animals and plants are waiting to be explored by young and old along panoramic walking trails. Right next to Lake Filzalm you’ll find a biotope with viewing boxes and nature discovery stations revealing secrets from the underwater world. Taking care of your health and wellbeing too are Kneipp stations with moor mud paddling pools and wading pools. The mountain inns around the lake indulge guests with typical specialities from the region. New from summer/autumn 2009: Forest Experience at Lake Filzalm on the Hochbrixen trail, coin minting at the seminar hut and the exhibition “60 years of the Brixen im Thale ski club”.
Ellmi’s Zauberwelt on the beautiful Hartkaiser Mountain
“Magical world and thrilling sensations” is the motto at Ellmi’s Zauberwelt on the Hartkaiser (1,555 m) in Ellmau. With the “Zauberexpress”, nature explorers big and small reach the Hartkaiser in just seven minutes. Here you’ll find the 4,000 m² children’s play park with a mystical fantasy world of fairies, goblins and forest spirits, not forgetting the magic frog “Ellmi” – all against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain scenery. Don’t miss the wood carving hut, petting zoo, climbing castle, maze, 15m water jet, magical rain forest or tree top walk. There are lots of new things too on the Rübezahl trail with its 22 wooden figures. Similarly, for the first time on the new Jägersteig (hunter’s) trail with adventure stations, you can discover the many varieties of fungi, flora and fauna. Enjoy the power of the mountains too from the comfort of the sun terraces at panoramic restaurant Bergkaiser.
Summer Retreat on the Hohe Salve
The Hohe Salve (1,829 m) is a mountain in the Tyrolean lowlands that offers stunning 360° views. Thanks to the Hopfgarten and Söll lift operators, conquering the summit across 70 three-thousand-metre-high peaks with little effort becomes a gentle pleasure. New horizons are created at Austria’s first revolving panoramic terrace at the summit restaurant, and likewise when the head chef serves up her “Ziachkiachln” (type of sweet or savoury doughnut) every Wednesday and Thursday. Visit the Salvenkirchlein, the pilgrimage church of John the Baptist, and discover the highest church in Tyrol. It looks back over more than 400 years of history (prayer every Wed. 01.07–16.09.09). The Sonnenweg, or sun trail, is a beautiful panoramic path around the summit, which in about half an hour takes you past sundials, a wind harp and explains the history of time measurement (tours daily 11am/12pm/1pm/2pm). Next to the inn and the church you’ll find the “sleeping giant“, a grey monster for kids to clamber over and romp about to their hearts’ content. Tempting tip on the Hohe Salve: sunrise trip on the first gondola for a mountain breakfast with magnificent views.
Playing at KaiserWelt, relaxing by the Jochstub’nsee
Situated between the mountain station of the 8-seater Scheffau-Brandstadl gondola and the Brandstadl mountain restaurant is KaiserWelt Scheffau. Right at the gondola mountain station, young and old leave the daily grind behind as soon as they get through the castle gate and into the Kaiser Forest. Here, on the castle wall, climbing wall, tree houses and play equipment, there’s plenty of adventure to be had and secrets of the forest to uncover. A visit to the craft corner even lets you show off your creative side. For leisurely walkers, the Panorama trail on the Hartkaiser to Ellmau, the Kaiser trail, Marmot trail and the path to romantic Jochstub’nsee come highly recommended. This idyllic mountain lake is a refuge for anyone looking for rest and relaxation amidst magnificent mountain scenery: comfortably sitting in a deckchair, let your eyes wander over the view of the Wilder Kaiser and Kitzbühel Alps. On the large sun terrace of the Brandstadl mountain restaurant, the Wilder Kaiser and Hohe Tauern ranges accompanied by famously good Tyrolean delicacies, give you an appetite to find even more outdoor experiences.
Natural Secrets up close at Hexenwasser in Hochsöll
Hexenwasser, or Witch Water, in Hochsöll invites visitors to more than 60 “experience stations” to observe, experiment and discover some amazing relationships. Understand time on the Sonnenweg (sun trail), learn about the art of broomstick riding in the Hexenwald (witch forest), train your foot reflexes on the barefoot track and experience the power of water at the old witch’s stone mill. A witch’s hearth, witch’s umbrella, singing water bowl and apiary plus grain milling and bread baking at the Stöcklalm or schnapps distilling with farmer Simon of the Koller pasture – there’s plenty to excite all the senses. Don’t miss the Salve chapel either with its more than 400-year-old history. In the summer of 2009, the Hexenwasser stations will be run by the staff, or “sorcerers”, following their motto “marvel – contemplate – comprehend” (21.05–18.10.09, 11am–3pm).
Games, Fun and Adventure at Alpinolino in Westendorf
At Alpinolino, the Alpine discovery park at the Talkaser (1,770 m) in Westendorf, everything revolves around fun and adventure. “Get smart“ is the motto here and at the many educational stations – including the amazing tree phone and marmot rally with feeling box and scent organ – you can find out about Tyrol’s mountains and their flora and fauna in an especially impressive way. Look forward to some curious, exciting and surprising experiences on the “animal puzzle tour” as well. The tour is well “supervised“ by Alpinolino “smart alec” mountain guides, who make the mountain come to life even more.
